Ab minor 6th chord. The Abm6 chord is a minor chord with an additional major 6th. To get the 6th (F) go up a whole-step (2 frets) from the 5th or a minor 3rd (3 frets) down from a root tone. You can also take a Abm7 chord, find its minor 7th Gb and move it just 1 fret (1 half-step) downwards to the major 6th F.
The Abm6 chord consists of the tones Ab (1), Cb (m3), Eb (5) and F (6). The 5th (Eb) can be omitted.
Common chord progressions with the Abm6 chord:
The II-V-I progression Abm7 Db7 Gbmaj7 can be modified to Abm7 Abm6 Gbmaj7. The Abm6 chord contains the same tones as a Db9 = Db7(9) chord without the root Db. Thus the Abm6 chord has a similar tendency to resolve into the Gbmaj7 chord as Db7 respectively Db9. The intensified minor character (sad, sentimental,…) goes along with the tranquilized movement of the bass.
Another chord progression with the same intention: instead of Abmaj7 Db7 Ebmaj you are playing Abmaj7 Abm6 Ebmaj7.
A different application are the so called line-clichés like Abm Abm(maj7) Abm7 Abm6, where just one single tone is moving up or down chromatically.
must know
You should memorize these chords, if you are using this chord type frequently.
moveable
You can transpose these chord shapes to any different key just by moving the whole chord shape along the guitar fretboard until the squared spot represents the new root.
capodaster
The pleasant sound and sometimes easier playability of an open chord can be put into practice by mounting a capodaster on the indicated fret. Of course that may goe along with the disadvantage of not being able to use the frets lower than the capo anymore.
